WMCA
Excellence in Care Awards
2020

These awards were launched, to acknowledge, celebrate and reward excellence in care delivery across the whole health and social care spectrum.

We have been overwhelmed by the response to the awards - particularly given the trying circumstances we have found ourselves in  this year - and it was a difficult process to produce a final shortlist and winners. The winners were announced during a virtual awards ceremony on Friday 17th July 2020 (due to COVID 19 restrictions)

Excellence in Care Award - Outstanding Contribution to Care
Winner:
David Johnson: Wychbury Care Services

In 1984 the Care Industry changed, and the emphasis was on Local Authorities to support the Care Homes. However initially they did not have any ideas of how to do this.

David and his wife (who was a Nurse) were one of the first Providers to set up a Care Home Wychbury in Stourbridge and put into place policies and procedures to ensure their staff knew how to look after there residents safely and sensitively.

Once Wychbury was working well, David went about supporting other Care Homeowners to share best practice and give practical advice at a time when there was none. Providers came to Wychbury to see what they did and discuss ideas. Soon they started to meet regularly and so was born, the Care Association, made up of 25 Care Homes, most are still members today. David was the initial president which continued for the next 10 years and he continued to offer his support after that.

David left the Care Industry for a while to live in Ireland, but now he’s back with renewed enthusiasm for Care and Wychbury, which is run now by his children, Daniel, Adam and Sara.

This Association was the start of the West Midlands Care Association and our aim of ‘A quality Care Service for a fair fee’.

We would like to award David this year's Oustanding Contribution to Care Aware for his work in Care, in Dudley, the West Midlands and to the Care Association

Debbie Le Quesne, Chief Executive Office of the West Midlands Care Association said: ‘It has been our pleasure to continue with this awards scheme to celebrate and promote excellence within the care industry across the region, particularly during a very trying time.

In this our third awards year we were staggered at the response - despite all the pressures everone has been under and it has been an extremely difficult process to arrive at a final shortlist.  We would like to congratulate the finalists and everyone nominated. We also extend our thanks to everyone who has taken the time to nominate someone.

Obviously it would not have been our choice to hold a virtual ceremony but he hope you enjoyed it. Hopefully for next years awards we will have returned to something resembling normality and will be able once again to hold an awards ceremony where we can all gather and celebrate what adult social care has achieved!’
