What Good Looks Like

A new What Good Looks Like (WGLL) self-assessment tool is now available to support adult social care providers at every stage of their digital journey.

Introduction

The free tool has been co-developed with people working across adult social care and is based on the national What Good Looks Like framework for digital working. It is designed to help care providers assess their current digital capabilities, reflect on areas for improvement, and access practical guidance to help plan next steps.

The tool takes around 30 minutes to complete. Once finished, users receive a personalised results report highlighting strengths and opportunities for development, with signposts to trusted information and resources.

Success measures of the WGLL framework

The self-assessment tool is built around the seven success measures outlined in What Good Looks Like: digital working in adult social care. Each success measure describes an essential element of good digital working in care settings:

  1. Well led: Your leaders understand the benefits of digital technology and have the confidence and capability to drive forward digital transformation, sharing and learning from best practice.
  2. Ensure smart foundations: Your organisation has modern and secure digital infrastructure, and staff have reliable access to comprehensive and up-to-date digital records.
  3. Safe practice: Good data and cyber security means organisations can safely use and share information which can improve care and support for people.
  4. Support workforce: Supporting your workforce means developing a skilled, capable workforce who can confidently identify, recommend and use appropriate technology safely and effectively for people drawing on social care.
  5. Empower people: A person-centred approach to the design and use of digital technologies can improve people’s quality of life and wellbeing and support independence.
  6. Improve care: Effective use of digital technology, data and processes can support the delivery of outstanding quality and personalised care and support at the right place and at the right time.
  7. Healthy populations: Having good data to understand and plan for the needs of the population (whether at a community level or individual level) means that we can reduce inequalities and improve outcomes for all people.
  8.

Each section of the self-assessment includes simple questions to help providers reflect on how well their organisation is doing in that area, and where they may want to develop further.

Who should complete the tool?

The WGLL self-assessment is aimed at individuals responsible for digital transformation in adult social care provider organisations. This could include registered managers, owners, digital leads or directors. You don’t need technical expertise to use the tool—just a good understanding of how digital is currently used in your service.

Supporting continuous improvement

The results report is clear, actionable and easy to share. It can help with service planning, internal improvement, staff engagement, and even evidence for commissioners or funding applications.

Providers can complete the tool more than once if they want to track progress over time or revisit their approach as things change.
