CQC ratings upgrade for the Garth

Turning a CQC setback into a stronger future

When Mr Sharma, Director and Owner, received the news that the Garth had been rated inadequate across every CQC domain, staff were shocked and families were understandably surprised. Despite the report, families continued to stand behind the home.

For Mr Sharma, maintaining morale has been one of the biggest challenges as improvement is a marathon, not a sprint, requiring repeated audits, evidence and visits to demonstrate that changes are not only made but embedded.

For Elena Jalbe, Hospitality Manager, hearing about the improvement in the home’s CQC report was an emotional moment.

“Honestly, I cried,” she says. After an incredibly difficult year, Jo called Elena into her office to share the news. “I hugged her and cried. I said, ‘I don’t believe it.’ We are back in business, so we can breathe. We are relieved.”

Amanda Lyndon, CQC’s deputy director of adult social care in the West Midlands, said:

“The Garth Care Home with Nursing should be proud of what it’s achieved and shows what’s possible when services commit to making improvements for the benefit of the people they support. We look forward to seeing the home keep building on this progress.”

The Biggest Lesson

Go back to basics. Review every area of the service, ask what you are doing, why you are doing it and whether there is a better way. If something doesn’t work, change it and keep refining.

Mr Sharma’s advice to other providers is equally clear: “Safety, safety and safety.” Run your own inspections, use the tools available, keep information organised and focus on identifying issues before someone else does.

Support from peers within the WMCA membership has also been invaluable. Sharing experiences, cross-checking approaches and learning from others can make an otherwise lonely journey feel far less daunting, a big thankyou therefore must go to three providers in particular (amongst others),  Jas & Bal at Amber Court , Navjot Singh of Aspen Hill Healthcare Limited & Karen Rogers MBE of Herefordshire Care homes   as t heir experience and guidance has been invaluable.

Joanne Randall the Nominated Individual, spoke to WMCA and explained that:

“One of the hardest things is getting people to understand why we need to do things differently, not just because they were being asked to” and that “A major success has been seeing staff embrace the changes”.

Building relationships with the local council was another crucial part of the turnaround. What began as a broken relationship developed into a strong, supportive partnership through hard work and honest conversations.

Joanne’s advice to other care homes facing a similar situation? Choose your support carefully. With so many consultancy options available, experience and CQC knowledge matter.

“It’s very easy to go down to inadequate very quickly, but it’s so much more difficult to get back up to good. It’s rare to go from inadequate to good, and it’s worth shouting about.”

A significant milestone

For Ken, the Registered Manager, the recent improvement in the home’s CQC report is a significant milestone after a challenging period of change.

Ken joined the home six months ago, and was impressed from the start by the staff, residents and the positive atmosphere. Despite the stress and uncertainty the team experienced for more than a year, staff continued to smile, laugh and come to work determined to do their best every day.

“The fact that they’re so resilient to it and just thought, ‘We just do our best every day anyway’,” says Ken. “They would smile and laugh along the way.” Ken’s own sense of humour, he adds, helped keep that positivity alive.

The improvement has been warmly welcomed by staff, residents and families, many of whom had been waiting more than a year for positive news.

For Ken, the turnaround has been about strong leadership, meaningful change and investing in people. Staff have been supported through retraining and development, helping them understand the changes required and feel part of the journey.

Recognising care as a profession

As Ken told WMCA;  “Good carers like we have here are a profession and should be treated like nurses in their profession.”

His advice to other care homes facing similar challenges is clear: understand whether you have the skills internally to turn things around, seek expert support where needed, put the right leadership in place, make meaningful changes and evidence the impact.

And the ambition doesn’t stop here. “By aiming for outstanding, you’re at least going to be good.”

Elena’s message to other care teams facing similar challenges is simple: “Don’t leave anything for tomorrow. Do today the best you can, because tomorrow is another day.”

Above all, she believes in teamwork. “It doesn’t matter if you’re a cleaner, carer, manager or in the kitchen. If we work together, you can do it.”
