Digital Healthchecks
As part of the national Better Security Better Care programme, we are offering FREE in-person Digital Health Check visits to review your data protection and cyber security policies. We believe that having a Digital Health Check could provide several important benefits for care providers.
What are the benefits of a Digital Health Check?
- Ensure Compliance: A Digital Health Check helps verify that your organisation meets the required data protection standards
- Enhanced Data Security: By reviewing your data security processes, the health check helps identify any vulnerabilities and strengthens your overall protection against data breaches and cyber threats.
- Confidential Report: The health check includes a confidential report that outlines what was found and how to improve, giving you clear steps for action.
- CQC Recognition: The health check provides evidence that can be used to demonstrate proactive efforts in data security and working in partnership, which can support your CQC inspection and potentially help you achieve higher ratings, including "Outstanding."
- Reduced Risk: By identifying issues early, you can prevent potential data breaches or penalties, thus reducing the risk of reputational damage or fines.
- Recognition for Going 'Above and Beyond': Participating in a DSPT health check shows that your organisation is committed to exceeding basic requirements and striving for excellence in data security.

Health Checks on site visits are available Monday - Friday
A morning visit will normally start at 10.00am and an afternoon visit will start at 1.00pm
We will normally need to be on site for no more than three hours
What does it involve?
The aim of the health check is to support you to verify the effectiveness of your data protection and cyber security arrangements and to help you to understand if and how they could be improved.
The health check has four elements:
1) A pre assessment of your main data and cyber policies.
2) A
Site visit
to your service by our team.
We will conduct a short on site visit with you that normally lasts no more than 3 hours. During the visit we’ll talk to managers who look after data protection and cyber security as well as staff working within the service across various roles. We won’t make any changes during the visit — just observations and suggestions. We will explore four areas:
- How staff are made aware of their data protection responsibilities, and if/when they complete data and cyber security training
- The ‘information flow’ through your service. That is, at a high level, what personal or confidential data you hold, where it came from and who you share it with, and what systems you use to record that data.
- What cyber security arrangements are in place e.g. password protection, firewall or anti-virus software.
- What business continuity arrangements are in place e.g. for backing up data or using alternative systems if you lost internet access.
3) A
non invasive systems check
During the visit, with your permission, we’ll take a look at how your digital systems are currently set up to protect against cyber risks. We will carry out a
technical check, using Microsoft PowerShell, on up to three computers that use the Windows operating system*. More information can be found in the
Better Security, Better Care technical check information sheet. The technical check does not change any of your system settings or access any data
4) Health Check Report
After the visit we will provide you with a confidential report about what we found. It will include a written summary with key findings and practical, tailored recommendations to help strengthen your data protection and cyber security arrangements. However, implementing recommendations remains an organisational decision for the participating care provider.
*Technical checks are only currently available on devices running Microsoft Windows
