Sensory Impairment Awareness
Course Aim
To improve delegates’ awareness of sensory impairment and develop practical approaches to supporting people with sight loss, hearing loss or combined sensory needs in a respectful and person-centred way.
Course Objectives
By the end of the course, delegates will have covered:
- The impact of sight loss, hearing loss and sensory changes.
- Common barriers experienced by people with sensory impairments.
- How sensory impairment can affect communication, confidence, independence and safety.
- Practical communication strategies for supporting people with sensory needs.
- Environmental factors that may increase or reduce risk.
- Ways to promote dignity, inclusion, choice and independence.
- Real-world examples of supporting people with sensory impairment in care settings.
Knowledge and Understanding Obtained During This Course
Delegates will have developed knowledge and understanding of:
- How sensory impairment can affect daily life and wellbeing.
- The importance of adapting communication to the individual.
- How to recognise barriers that may increase isolation, distress or risk.
- Practical ways to make care environments safer and more accessible.
- How to support people without taking away independence.
- How dignity, patience and person-centred care improve the experience of support.
- The role of care staff in noticing changes and escalating concerns appropriately.
