CALLING ALL MEMBERS OF THE ARMED FORCES COMMUNITY RESIDING IN CARE HOMES IN THE BLACK COUNTRY

Irene Ramdehal is the  Armed Forces Covenant Officer appointed by the Black Country local authorities of City of Wolverhampton, Dudley, Sandwell and Walsall Council.

Her role is to raise awareness of the Armed Forces Covenant within the Local Authorities and to also work with organisations, partner agencies and charities who support the Armed Forces Community.

The Armed Forces Covenant is a promise from the nation that those who serve or have served in the armed forces, and their families, are treated fairly.

Irene is currently trying to identify any veterans or immediate family members that may be residing in Black Country Care Homes.

The Armed Forces Community is made up of serving personnel including reservists, veterans and family members which could consist of spouses/partners including former spouses/partners, couples in a committed relationship and dependent children.

How can you help?

You may already be aware of people who will live within your Care Home(s) that fall into one of the categories mentioned above. However, too often people will not declare they have served unless they are asked.

That is why I would encourage you to ask all your residents the following question “Have you or a member of your immediate family served in the UK Armed Forces”

When asking the question, it is important to advise people why you are asking. Your residents may be able to access support – emotional and/or financial from one of the many military charities which exist.

The Armed Forces Covenant Officer can also signpost your residents to the relevant support agencies with the local authorities, statutory bodies and charities.

If you would like information on how to sign the Covenant or if you wish to know more about the support on offer please contact Irene Ramdehal at irene.ramdehal@wolverhampton.gov.uk or call 07800 919864.

You can find guidance and support about the Armed Forces Covenant here.

Published July 2025 (data correct as at 2024/25) Skills for Care have launched their annual report on the size and structure of ythe care workforce This provides the most up-to-date and comprehensive overview of the size and structure of the adult social care sector and workforce in England. A short, written report is available: download a copy of the report here. The methodology for this year’s report has changed from previous years. Adult social care related roles employed by the NHS are no longer included in the headline statistics for the size of the adult social care workforce. This change has been applied retrospectively to previous years, so the trends in this report are consistent. Comparing figures from this report to previous reports will not produce a valid trend. Also, our estimates for the number of filled posts in the independent sector now come from our automated data pipeline. This has resulted in substantial improvements to our estimates over time and some figures have changed as a result from previous versions of this report. For further information, see our statement. To download the data behind the visualisation below, including trended information, please see the Workforce estimates page.

Details about the Employment Rights Bill and how this provides the legislative framework for FPAs were also shared. The webinar explored how the Government has been engaging with the sector so far, and ways in which those working in adult social care can get involved, including plans for a public consultation later this year.
