Would you like to contribute to the way dementia looks in the future?

Join Dementia Research (JDR) www.joindementiaresearch.nihr.ac.uk is a UK-wide Department of Health and Social Care-funded  service that makes it easy for anyone to take part in vital dementia research studies. People with dementia or memory concerns, their carers, or anyone who is interested and over the age of 18 can register.  It is also possible to register on behalf of someone who may not be able to do so themselves if it is in their best interest.

JDR is run by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) in partnership with Alzheimer Scotland, Alzheimer's Research UK and Alzheimer's Society. The service enables people to register their interest in participating in dementia research and be matched to suitable studies.

Organisations like yourselves can play a key part in offering your clients, their family members and carers the opportunity to take part in important dementia research.

Talking to them about research is one way to provide high quality care and helps you meet specific guidelines i.e. NICE, NHS England Dementia Good Care Planning, CQC. It also helps to improve our understanding of dementia as well as shape services and treatment of patients in the NHS and wider care settings.

Volunteers say that taking part in research makes them feel like they are making a difference to people living with dementia and giving them hope for the future.

The NIHR are keen to engage with care homes and villages to expand their links within your community.

If you would like further information on this service and the training or support on offer to promote Join Dementia Research please feel free to contact Jacqueline Smart, Join Dementia Research Lead, West Midlands on  jacqueline.smart@nihr.ac.uk

Published July 2025 (data correct as at 2024/25) Skills for Care have launched their annual report on the size and structure of ythe care workforce This provides the most up-to-date and comprehensive overview of the size and structure of the adult social care sector and workforce in England. A short, written report is available: download a copy of the report here. The methodology for this year’s report has changed from previous years. Adult social care related roles employed by the NHS are no longer included in the headline statistics for the size of the adult social care workforce. This change has been applied retrospectively to previous years, so the trends in this report are consistent. Comparing figures from this report to previous reports will not produce a valid trend. Also, our estimates for the number of filled posts in the independent sector now come from our automated data pipeline. This has resulted in substantial improvements to our estimates over time and some figures have changed as a result from previous versions of this report. For further information, see our statement. To download the data behind the visualisation below, including trended information, please see the Workforce estimates page.

Details about the Employment Rights Bill and how this provides the legislative framework for FPAs were also shared. The webinar explored how the Government has been engaging with the sector so far, and ways in which those working in adult social care can get involved, including plans for a public consultation later this year.
