Introducing our partner  Grace Cares -  Supporting Environmental Sustainability in Care

Grace Cares is a not-for-profit organisation on a mission to make care sustainable. Based in Lichfield, we focus on strong Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles to support care workers, older adults, their families, and care providers while addressing critical sustainability challenges. Visit www.gracecares.co.uk to learn more about our work.

What Grace Cares Does

At Grace Cares, we believe sustainability is the cornerstone of better care. Here’s how we contribute:

1. Rescuing and Repurposing Care Equipment

Through partnerships with the NHS, we save thousands of pieces of care equipment from going to landfill, refurbishing and reselling them at half the original RRP or less. This reduces environmental waste while helping care providers demonstrate sustainable purchasing practices that also support the sector.

2. Supporting Care Workers, Older Adults, and Families

Profits from our equipment sales are reinvested into the social care community. We provide hardship grants and organise companionship tea parties for care workers and older adults.

3. Sustainability Advocacy

Our ‘Caring for Tomorrow’ initiative equips care providers with ESG and sustainability support. We offer quarterly webinars, training, workshops, and comprehensive guides developed with DEFRA and WRAP, helping organisations align with green policies while maintaining high care standards. With CQC now regulating environmental sustainability, our resources are invaluable.

4. Community Programmes

We’ve hosted over 40 sustainable activities in care homes, including kindness rock painting, bird box building, and bug hotel construction. Our Pimp My Ride campaign, where schools repurposed zimmer frames, was featured at The Care Show Birmingham and aired on ITV Central News.

How Grace Cares Benefits Care Providers

For members of the West Midlands Care Association, Grace Cares offers practical and impactful solutions:

  • Cost Savings: Affordable refurbished equipment helps care providers stretch budgets without sacrificing quality.
  • Enhanced ESG Compliance: We guide care organisations in meeting ESG standards, essential for net-zero targets by 2050 and CQC environmental regulations. This boosts reputations, improves recruitment, and attracts more clients.
  • Improved Community Engagement: Our programmes build goodwill and trust with residents, families, and local communities.
  • Award-Winning Expertise: Grace Cares has been recognised with multiple accolades, including the Sustainable Business of the Year Award from Lichfield District Council, ESG Leaders from the Social Care Leadership Awards and the Environmental Action Award from Aviva. By partnering with us, providers can proudly showcase their commitment to sustainability.

Published July 2025 (data correct as at 2024/25) Skills for Care have launched their annual report on the size and structure of ythe care workforce This provides the most up-to-date and comprehensive overview of the size and structure of the adult social care sector and workforce in England. A short, written report is available: download a copy of the report here. The methodology for this year’s report has changed from previous years. Adult social care related roles employed by the NHS are no longer included in the headline statistics for the size of the adult social care workforce. This change has been applied retrospectively to previous years, so the trends in this report are consistent. Comparing figures from this report to previous reports will not produce a valid trend. Also, our estimates for the number of filled posts in the independent sector now come from our automated data pipeline. This has resulted in substantial improvements to our estimates over time and some figures have changed as a result from previous versions of this report. For further information, see our statement. To download the data behind the visualisation below, including trended information, please see the Workforce estimates page.
