The King's Trust Health & Social Care Support in Recruitment

The King's Trust (formerly the Prince's Trust) are funded by the Department of Health & Social Care to support your organisation recruit the next generation of young people into the social care sector.

They work in conjunction with NHS England's Widening Access & Participation initiative to support young people aged 16-30 from diverse backgrounds into Health & Social care careers.

Please see below two case studies of young people that have participated in the King's Trust programmes that have gone on to successfully forge carers in social care.

Rani, 25 – Birmingham

After leaving school at 16 and years of working in retail, Rani has been enjoying her role as a Support Worker at a children’s home for over a year now and is currently studying for a Level 4 in Health and Social, Children and Young People Care.

Like many young people, she recalls not enjoying traditional education and left school at 16 with a handful of qualifications; one of which included health and social care.

Before finding the career she is now so passionate about, Rani spent many years working across retail and finally made the decision to leave to pursue so. While the pandemic resulted in fewer working hours in the sector, and Rani having to enrol on Universal Credit to help support herself as a result, she used this time as an opportunity to embrace her want for a career change - working with young people.

Rani found The Prince’s Trust Get Into Health and Social Care programme through a recommendation by her mum. She took the plunge and secured offers from all the employers she interviewed with on completion of the programme.

Having spent her summer holidays volunteering at an adventure playground managed by her auntie in London, Rani always had a natural affinity to working with young people and decided to accept her offer at the Cambian Group – working with children and young people with autism, asperges and other learning difficulties and has been loving it ever since!

Rani is thriving in her role as a Support Worker at the home and was most recently promoted to cover temporarily as Team Leader.

Qadan Ahmed, 21, Leicester, NHS Mentoring Programme.

Qadan has recently secured a full-time permanent job as a domiciliary care assistant.

Before joining the programme, Qadan was unemployed. She had always had a passion for social care but didn’t have previous work experience and lacked confidence at interviews.

She was referred to the Prince’s Trust by the Leicester Job Centre and decided to join the NHS mentoring programme as she didn’t know how to get started in the sector.

Qadan would recommend the NHS mentoring programme to young people who would like to start a career in Health and Social Care and need some guidance: “My mentor helped me understand what opportunities were more suitable for me and what steps I had to take to achieve my goal. She encouraged and supported me in my job search and gave me some useful interview tips. When I got the job, she offered me the opportunity to receive financial support through Development Awards”.

Qadan feels very positive about the future now: “I want to gain work experience and then explore other opportunities available in the sector. My ultimate goal is to become a care home manager”.

Qadan has just completed her training and will start her new job this week.
