A practical course designed to support safer medicines practice in adult social care settings.
Full Description:
Medication administration is a high-responsibility area of care practice. Errors, poor recording, missed doses, unclear instructions, unsafe storage or weak communication can place people at risk and create significant concerns for providers. This course supports delegates to understand the key principles of safe medication administration and management within their role. It explores the medication cycle, safe administration checks, MAR records, common errors, storage, disposal, reporting concerns, professional boundaries and the importance of following policies and prescriber instructions.
Course Aim:
To improve delegates’ knowledge, confidence and awareness of safe medication administration and management in adult social care.
Learning Objectives:
- Describe the key responsibilities of care staff when supporting or administering medication.
- Understand the importance of following medication policies, care plans and prescriber instructions.
- Identify common medication errors and how they may occur.
- Explain the importance of accurate MAR recording.
- Recognise concerns relating to missed doses, refusals, side effects and medication changes.
- Understand safe storage, handling and disposal principles.
- Recognise when medication concerns should be reported or escalated.
- Understand the importance of competence, accountability and working within role boundaries.
Mapping / How it supports:
Supports safe care and treatment, medication governance, staff competence, record keeping, safeguarding awareness, risk reduction and quality assurance. Source grounding includes NICE SC1: Managing medicines in care homes and CQC Regulation 12 guidance on safe care and treatment.
