Course Aim


To increase delegates’ awareness of substance misuse and develop their confidence in recognising concerns, understanding risk and responding appropriately within health and social care settings.


Course Objectives


By the end of the course, delegates will have covered:


  • Different types of substance misuse and how they may affect individuals.
  • Possible signs and indicators of substance misuse.
  • Links between substance misuse, vulnerability, mental health, safeguarding and risk.
  • How substance misuse may impact care, support, relationships and decision-making.
  • Professional boundaries when supporting individuals affected by substance misuse.
  • When and how to escalate concerns appropriately.
  • How to respond with empathy, professionalism and respect.


Knowledge and Understanding Obtained During This Course


Delegates will have developed knowledge and understanding of:


  • The potential impact of substance misuse on health, wellbeing and safety.
  • How to recognise possible indicators of concern.
  • The importance of avoiding judgement, stigma and assumptions.
  • How substance misuse may increase vulnerability and safeguarding risk.
  • How to maintain professional boundaries while offering appropriate support.
  • The importance of accurate recording, reporting and escalation.
  • How compassionate, person-centred responses can support safer care and better engagement.
