Fuller overview:

This practical 3-hour course is designed for adult social care managers and senior staff who want to move from awareness into safe management of AI in care services.

The course explores both the opportunities and the risks of AI in real-world adult social care. On the opportunity side, it looks at where AI may support admin reduction, help managers organise information more effectively, support the first draft of low-risk documents, and improve the clarity and structure of policies, procedures, and risk-related documents.

On the risk side, the course looks in practical detail at confidentiality, accuracy, context, over-reliance, and the risk of AI-generated wording sounding polished while still omitting key facts or creating unsafe records.

A particularly important section focuses on AI and care notes, as this is likely to be one of the first areas where staff may be tempted to use public AI tools in unsafe ways. The course explores exactly where things can go wrong, how this could affect continuity of care, safeguarding, communication, and governance, and what safer practice looks like.

The session also helps managers think about the practical response required in their own organisation, including staff boundaries, guidance, oversight, review, and the first steps towards a proportionate AI policy or internal management framework.

Learning outcomes:

By the end of the course, learners will be able to:

  • identify appropriate and inappropriate uses of AI in adult social care services
  • distinguish clearly between helpful support uses and unsafe substitution of judgement
  • explain the key risks around care notes, confidentiality, accuracy, context, and over-reliance
  • recognise where AI may help managers reduce admin burden and improve the structure of policies, procedures, and risk-related documents
  • explain why public chatbots should not be used for real client documentation
  • apply practical management principles for safer use, including policy, staff guidance, oversight, review, and escalation
  • take the first steps toward a proportionate AI boundary or policy for their organisation
